Stephen J. Sherman
Mercer County Controller

Steve Sherman is a lifelong resident of Mercer County, who chose to establish his career and build his life here.  Steve holds a professional license from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of State Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs as a Funeral Director.  He is also licensed in Pennsylvania as an Insurance Agent.
 
Mr. Sherman has successfully owned and operated multiple small businesses in the area and currently serves as president of the Sherman Funeral Home & Crematory LLC.  As a licensed professional, Steve has the education, knowledge, business and financial experience that will contribute to and advance the position of county controller.  He believes that serving as Mercer County Controller is a privilege that requires an educated and grounded business professional to undertake this great responsibility.  He also believes this position should focus on the conservative and accurate use of taxpayer funds.  Moreover, he believes he is the correct candidate who can apply business experience in a way that benefits Mercer County taxpayers.  Steve also hopes to give small business owners a voice and security in the county in which they operate.
 
Steve graduated with honors from Hickory High School.  While in high school, he was a student athlete and recipient of the AAA award for "Arts, Academics, and Athletics".  Growing up Steve regularly volunteered and spent time helping throughout the community.  He studied at West Virginia University in their business school and continued his education at Penn State University Sharon, PA and Thiel College in Greenville.  Mr. Sherman graduated and received his diploma from Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science, the oldest mortuary school in the United States.  His accounting coursework was completed at two nationally accredited institutions.
 
As the current president of Sherman Funeral Home & Crematory LLC and CEO of Sherman State Transport, LLC it is important to understand that in addition to the professional process & procedure of a funeral director, Steve is also responsible for the budget of his businesses every year.  The ability of the controller in this role is critical.  Each year the budget may change, however it is the controller's job to properly supervise and allocate funds to insure the county can function properly without interruption.  Mr. Sherman believes there is no room for unnecessary spending and he has paramount experience, spanning years.  In research of the current controller's office, Steve has identified multiple areas that need improvement including early detection of budgetary shortfalls; fiscal conservancy and control adverse tax implications for Mercer County residents. 
 
 
Mr. Sherman has also served as a board member and past president of multiple businesses and professional organizations.  He volunteers his time at the Shenango Valley Animal Shelter.  He is past president of the Holy Name Society and Parish Council at St. Bartholomew's Roman Catholic Chuch, where he and his wife, Angelia attend together with their son, Stephen.
